Social intervention

Short Film as a Means of Social Intervention
Thursday, March 12th at 1:30 PM, UQAC Auditorium (P0-5000)

How can the processes of short film creation, direction and/or broadcasting help individuals suffering from social exclusion due to family negligence, mental health problems and poverty (to name just a few) regain a sense of belonging and recover their self-esteem? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this medium when it is used in social intervention and other contexts (what should be avoided?), and how can we encourage subjects to speak out during the creative process in an integrative context?

Wapikoni Mobile (ONF), Le Groupe l’Itinéraire, La Réplique, Parole citoyenne (ONF) and Homeless nation (ONF) are just a few organizations who have set out to answer these challenging questions. In an age when young people are increasingly Internet-savvy, these organizations have developed special initiatives aimed towards youths and adolescents dealing with problem situations, which allow them to create and direct short films that represent their own interests, films that bear witness to their particular realities.

This forum addresses the relevance and efficiency of the short film art form as a means of social intervention.

Social workers, students in social work and psychology, concerned citizens and filmmakers are all invited to participate in a discussion with our panelists. Psychoeducator Élyse Benoît (La Réplique co-founder) will be hosting this forum.
